“Ooo, that smell.
Can’t you smell that smell.” –Lynrd Skynyrd, 70’s Southern Rock Band
Have you ever woken in your bed gripping the sheets in a cold sweat? Do your teeth and gums hurt when you wake because you were grinding them all night in fear and anxiety? Fear is a powerful emotion. It can stop you dead in your tracks. It can wake you in the middle of the night.
Fear has its own kind of Gravitational Force, pulling you back into familiar places, “comfort zones.” You may have a vision of your life, a dream that calls you. And yet a well-meaning family member may say, “Be careful, you don’t want to go from the frying pan into the fire”
And you then feel the rug pulled from under you.
Yes, fear is real. The fear of violence, making a bad decision with consequences, being the butt of others criticism… or God forbid… being seen in the world as “stupid.” How many actions did you take because you were afraid of looking “stupid? ” Sure, you have a whole comedy routine around it the story to protect your ego, and you can make certainly everyone laugh about it. But, still there is that … Fear.
I could give you the well-worn statement about Fear is False Evidence Appearing Real. But what do you do when the gravitational force to stay is bigger, than your dream to experience more…?
One of my clients tells me the story of shopping in the women’s fashion store White House Black Market when she heard Colbie Calliat singing the upbeat tune “Bubbly.” You know, the song about “it starts in my toes, then it goes to my nose.” It was a totally happy moment for her. She was doing here favorite thing, shopping. Then, she smelled something familiar that stopped her dead in her tracks. Whatever it was, perfume or hair product on someone walking by, the scent triggered her. And she felt her emotions rapidly moving towards anxiety. By the time she got to her car, her body was almost in a panic. Fortunately, we’ve been working together as healing partners, using EFT Tapping. And she was able to Tap herself into a better state to be safe while driving.
In our appointment, we Tapped on memories and emotions that emerged from smelling that scent. It took some digging and some courage, but we excavated some old almost forgotten memories of powerless and trauma. The body remembers! And she was able to feel the weight of it lift off as the memories and binding emotions were released.
It was beautiful to watch her go from confusion and fear, into curiousity and courage and then just “let it all go.”
It really can be that simple. Wouldn’t that feel great, just to unburden yourself?
This is a woman who is learning to care for herself. It has not always been that way for her. Today, she’ll invest in fashion that makes her feel great just as easily as she’ll invest in herself with private Tapping sessions. She says: “It is SO worth it!”
I have to smile when remember this, because what she means is: ”I am worth it.”
Worthy. That feeling of the lump in your throat melting, your heart chakra opening and receiving, front and back. “I am worthy.”
I guess we all come to a place in life where we realize, it’s up to us to make ourselves happy, to invest in ourselves, to finally practice self-care. To find how “me as a person of worth” chooses, thinks and behaves.
When you experience the rewards of investing in yourself, the lightness of being, … it’s a no-brainer.
Until we meet again,
